Temporo-Mandibular Joint - Evidence based Examination & Management- Extension to Cervical Spine Course

Course Overview

Course Description

Using the latest international research and terminology, this course has been crafted as comprehensive lecture and lab to prepare the physiotherapist to effectively assess and treat the TMJ.

This lecture will include regional interdependence components including cervical and thoracic spine, dizziness, vertigo, tinnitus and headaches/migraines. Interventions will include manual therapy techniques, joint manipulations, soft tissue techniques, dry needling, and specific exercises/stretches. Discussion on oral day splints and night splints will be provided.

Objectives

  1. Describe the functional anatomy of the TMJ
  2. Understand the normal kinematics of the TMJ
  3. Gain knowledge of pathological conditions involving the TMJ
  4. Interpret dental relevance to the TMJ disorder
  5. Identify surgical indication for temporomandibular joint disorder
  6. Recognize differential diagnoses of TMJ disorder
  7. Perform evaluation of patients with TMJ disorder
  8. Provide appropriate physical therapy intervention for patients with TMJ disorder
  9. Understand the treatment rationale for chronic temporomandibular joint disorder
  10. Familiarize oneself with relevant research for evidence-based practice
  11. Discuss assessment and treatment of regionally interdependent players that contribute to, or derive from, TMJD such as posture, cervical and thoracic spine impairments, dizziness, vertigo, tinnitus, and more.
